Education Programming
Educational programming was a natural path to board service. It dovetailed nicely with my goals of getting students connected to the professional design community. I began in a supportive committee role planning studio crawls and workshops. Upon being promoted to Vice President, I became responsible for planning the annual Kansas City regional portfolio review day (over 40 student participants and reviewers each year) hosted at Avila, Kansas City Art Institute, and Johnson County Community College. As well as interfacing with university student groups, coordinating the student grant process, awarding scholarships, and presenting student winners at the A Awards.
Explore Design Curriculum
A collaborative effort of the Center for Architecture & Design (CFAD), the Explore Design program introduces students and teachers to design, design thinking, and careers in design. Participants experience hands-on, collaborative, and dynamic workshops that will illustrate the relevance of design in their daily lives and enhance their appreciation of design and the world around them.
I served as AIGA lead on the project and developed the graphic design session of the curriculum. It included interactive typography focused activities such as celebrity font matching and candy letterforms. I also developed the “So you want to be a graphic designer?” handout.
The program has particular focus on engaging communities of students within the urban core who have had minimal exposure to design. During my time on the CFAD board, we hosted Explore Design at the Ewing Marion Kauffman School, Guadalupe Centers Middle School, Center High School, and Crossroads Academy.
Made in the Middle Creative Conference
A vision, spurred by designers Tad & Jessica Carpenter, the MITM Creative Conference was born as a way to celebrate design in the “middle.” Alongside members of Carpenter Collective, AIGA KC helped planned a two-day conference (in 2016 and again in 2018) to showcase these people, inspire designers from all over the country, and share a little midwestern hospitality. Keep an eye out for MITM 2020, coming soon!
